N-phenylmaleimide (N-PMI) manufactured by Yangchen Tech,adding a small amount of that to ABS/PVC (via copolymerization) can significantly improve the thermal properties of ABS or PVC. N-Phenylmaleimide increases the glass transition temperature (Tg) and softening point of plastics. For example, ABS usually softens around 90-100°C; adding NPMI-based copolymers can increase its heat distortion temperature or Vicat temperature by tens of degrees.
Styrene-NPMI-maleic anhydride modifier (NSM copolymer manufactured by Yangchen Tech) has a Tg ≈197°C and a decomposition onset temperature of about 400°C. ABS blends with 10-30wt% of this NSM terpolymer show an increase in Vicat softening temperature from 103.7°C (pure ABS) to 111-126°C. Even with the addition of only about 1wt% N-Phenylmaleimide, the heat distortion temperature of ABS increases by about 2°C. If the N-PMI addition amount is expanded to 15-30wt%, its heat resistance (HDT about 125-135°C) can approach that of engineering plastics.
